Stone Root

The scientific name for Stone Root is Collinsonia Canadensis. Stone Root is also known as Knob Root, Hardback, Knot Root, Horseweed, and Horsebalm. While there are many different names for this herb, it is a relatively understudied herb. Many well-known and respected herbal informational sources have yet to develop a documented library of its uses and history. The parts of the plant that are typically used are both the root and rhizome.  The constituents of the herbal plant consist of saponin, alkaloids, tannin & resin.

Stone Root acts as a diuretic, sedative, antispasmodic, astringent, and tonic. It is also good for the urinary tract. Stone root has been known to break up mucus as well. Other successful trials allude that Stone Root is also helpful for bronchitis, headache, cramps, indigestion and hemorrhoids.

This undervalued herbal remedy is often described simply as a diuretic, but its main use is to strengthen the structure and function of the veins. It is particularly good for the treatment of hemorrhoids. It is also used for treating spasmodic pain in the rectum and for anal fissures and is excellent for varicose veins taken internally. Its gentle astringent action also makes it useful to treat diarrhea.
